Wedding invitation wording from the couple, with samples

Wedding invitation wording when the couple hosts: samples that include both families, modern and simple lines, a Hindi version, and where parents' names go.

When the couple invites guests in their own names, the wording is usually warmer and more personal than a parent-hosted card, and it often still honours both families with a line such as “together with our families” or “with the blessings of our parents”. Couples choose this when they're paying for the wedding themselves, when they're marrying a little later in life, or simply because they'd like the invitation to sound like them.

The structure

  1. An optional invocation or a line of blessing.
  2. The couple's names, often first names only on a modern invitation.
  3. A line acknowledging the families: “together with our families”, “with the blessings of our parents”.
  4. The invitation itself: “invite you to celebrate our wedding”.
  5. Date, day, time and venue.
  6. Other functions and contacts, as on any invitation.

The names, dates and places in the samples below are examples.

Including the parents

Leaving parents off a couple-hosted invitation can hurt, even when the couple is paying. There are gentle ways to include them without changing who's hosting:

  • A blessings line at the top: “With the blessings of Smt. Lata and Shri Suresh Iyer, and Smt. Meera and Shri Rajesh Mehta”.
  • “Together with their families” after the couple's names.
  • The parents' names under the contacts, as the people guests can call.
  • A separate line at the bottom: “Warm regards from the Mehta and Iyer families”.

If the parents host some functions and the couple others, each invitation can name its own hosts. The parents' wording guide has samples for the functions they host.

A Hindi version from the couple

Hindi invitations from the couple are less common, but they read naturally when kept simple.

When the couple is marrying later, or again

Couples in their thirties and forties, and couples marrying for a second time, very often host in their own names. The wording tends to be simpler and more personal, and it may mention children: “Along with Aanya and Vihaan, we invite you to celebrate our wedding.” Keep the focus on the celebration rather than on explaining anything.

Pages on a couple-hosted digital invitation

A digital invitation gives the couple room that a card never did. A common running order, one idea per page, looks like this:

  1. The cover. Your names, the date and the city, with the invocation if you use one.
  2. A short note from the two of you. Two or three sentences in your own voice. This is where a couple-hosted invitation feels different from a parents' card.
  3. The functions. Each with its date, time, venue and dress code.
  4. Venue and travel. Map links, parking, and hotel details for guests from out of town.
  5. Contacts and a closing line. The sibling or friend taking calls, and a line from both families.

Keep the note short. Guests open the invitation for the details, and a paragraph that runs past one screen gets skipped.

Who replies to whom

On a parent-hosted card, guests reply to the parents. On a couple-hosted one, they'll reply to whoever sent the message, which is often the couple themselves, at a time when they're busiest. Give one or two contacts on the invitation, a sibling or a friend who has agreed to take the calls, and the couple's phones stay quieter in the last week.

Tone and consistency

Whatever tone you choose, keep it across the whole invitation. A playful opening followed by stiff function listings reads oddly. Read it aloud once; if it sounds like the two of you, it's right. Questions people ask

Is it acceptable for the couple to send their own wedding invitation?

Yes. It's common when the couple is hosting or paying for the wedding, and most families are happy with it as long as the parents are acknowledged.

How do we include our parents if we're hosting?

Add a blessings line with their names at the top, or “together with our families” after your names. Parents' names can also appear as contacts.

Should both of our names be written in full?

On a formal invitation, yes. On a modern one, first names alone are fine, as long as the full names appear somewhere guests can see, such as the contacts or the last page.

Can we mention our children on the wedding invitation?

Yes. A line such as “Along with Aanya and Vihaan, we invite you” is warm and common when either partner has children.
