A cradle ceremony invitation invites family and friends to see a newborn placed in a decorated cradle for the first time, usually together with the naming. In Maharashtra it's part of the barsa, around the twelfth day; in Tamil Nadu it's the thottil ceremony; and many other communities have their own version. The invitation gives the date, the time, the home or venue, and often says that women of the family will sing traditional lullabies.
What usually happens
- The cradle is decorated with flowers, toys and a soft mattress.
- A short puja, often to Ganesh, is performed.
- Women of the family pass the baby to each other across or under the cradle, in a custom many families keep.
- The baby is placed in the cradle, and the name is whispered or announced.
- Lullabies are sung while the cradle is gently swung.
- Guests bless the baby, and a meal or sweets follow.
Every family differs
Rituals differ widely between families and regions. Treat this as the common pattern and follow your elders.

Decorating the cradle
- Fresh flowers, marigold or jasmine, wound around the frame, kept away from the baby's face.
- A soft mattress and a light cotton sheet.
- A few small toys or a rattle tied to the side.
- A clear space around it for the women who'll sing and swing the cradle.
Safety first
Keep flowers, threads and decorations out of the baby's reach and well away from the face. Swing the cradle gently, and never leave the baby alone in a crowded room.
Gifts for the baby
Guests usually bring something small and practical: clothes in the next size up, a silver bowl, spoon or anklets, soft toys, or cash in an envelope. In many families the grandparents give the cradle itself, or a silver chain. Nobody expects anything elaborate, and a line on the invitation saying “your blessings are enough” is widely understood if the family prefers no gifts.
Timing around mother and baby
A cradle ceremony comes only days or weeks after the birth, when the mother is still recovering and the baby's routine is unsettled. Keep the ceremony short, around an hour, schedule it after a feed, and let the mother join for the ceremony itself and rest afterwards. Guests understand when the family excuses itself early; a newborn's household runs on the baby's clock.
Lullabies
The songs are the heart of the ceremony. In Maharashtra, women sing palna songs; in Tamil Nadu, thalattu; every family has its own. If the elders know the old songs, ask them to lead; it's often the moment the family remembers most. A cousin recording them on a phone keeps them for the next generation.
Record the songs
Ask the grandmothers to sing, and have someone record it. Those recordings become some of a family's most treasured possessions.
Combining it with the naming
Most families hold the cradle ceremony and the naming together, because both mark the baby's formal welcome into the family. The usual order is the puja, then the naming, often whispered first into the baby's ear, then the cradle and the songs. If your family names the baby on a different day, the cradle ceremony can stand on its own, and the invitation simply says “cradle ceremony” rather than “naming”.
