A janoi invitation, also called an upanayana or yagnopavit invitation, tells guests about a boy's sacred thread ceremony: his name, the date, the time of the ceremony and the meal, and the venue. Gujarati families usually call it janoi (જનોઈ) or યજ્ઞોપવીત સંસ્કાર, and in many communities it's one of the most important family ceremonies after a wedding, with its own invitation, relatives travelling, and a day of rituals.
What the ceremony is
Upanayana is one of the sanskaras, the rites of passage, traditionally marking the start of a boy's formal learning. He receives the sacred thread, the janoi or yagnopavit, and is taught the Gayatri mantra. The ceremony is observed in Brahmin families and in several other communities; customs vary widely between regions and families.
What usually happens
- Ganesh puja and mandap rituals, often the day before or the same morning.
- Mundan, a ritual haircut, in many families.
- A ritual bath and new clothes for the boy.
- The thread ceremony: the boy receives the yagnopavit, usually from his father.
- The Gayatri mantra is whispered to him, often under a cloth, by his father or the priest.
- Bhiksha: the boy asks for alms, first from his mother, in the traditional words.
- A havan, and blessings from the elders.
- A meal for the family and guests.
In some Gujarati families there's also a playful moment when the boy sets off for Kashi to study, and his maternal uncle persuades him to come home. It's often the most photographed part of the day.
When it's held
Traditionally the ceremony was held in boyhood, and many families still choose an age between seven and sixteen, on a day set by the family priest. Others hold it just before the boy's wedding, sometimes on the same days as the wedding rituals. The invitation goes out two to four weeks ahead, earlier if relatives travel.
What the invitation should say
- The boy's name, written with ચિ. in Gujarati or चि. in Hindi.
- The hosts, usually the parents, often with the grandparents' blessings.
- The date and the main muhurat, and the times of other rituals if guests are invited to them.
- The meal time.
- The venue: home, a hall, or the family's samaj wadi.
- A contact for relatives travelling from outside.

Planning the day
- Talk to the priest early about the muhurat, the rituals and the samagri list.
- Plan the boy's clothes: many families have a traditional outfit for the ceremony and a festive one for the meal.
- Seat the elders well; the rituals take a few hours.
- Brief the mama if your family has the Kashi moment, so he's ready with his part.
- Keep the boy fed and rested. Some families keep him fasting until the ceremony; check with the priest what's expected, and plan accordingly.
Explain as it happens
Ask a relative to explain each ritual quietly to guests from other communities as it happens. A janoi is full of meaning, and guests appreciate understanding what they're watching.
Gifts
Guests often give the boy a gift of cash in an envelope, a silver item, books, or something he'll use as a student, such as a pen or a watch. If the family would rather guests didn't bring gifts, a gentle line on the invitation is widely understood.
