A Tamil wedding invitation traditionally begins with the pillaiyar suzhi, the symbol உ written at the top for Ganesh, and is headed சுபமுகூர்த்த பத்திரிகை (subha muhurtha pathirikai) or திருமண அழைப்பிதழ். It names the couple with honorifics, gives the date and the muhurtham as a window of time, names the kalyana mandapam, and invites guests with their family to bless the couple. Many families add the reception and the nichayathartham if it's close to the wedding.
About the samples
The names, dates and places in the samples are examples. Have a Tamil reader in the family check the wording, especially the honorifics, before you share.
The usual order
- The pillaiyar suzhi: உ at the very top, sometimes with a line for the family deity.
- The heading: சுபமுகூர்த்த பத்திரிகை or திருமண அழைப்பிதழ்.
- The couple: திருநிறைச்செல்வன் before the groom's name and திருநிறைச்செல்வி before the bride's, with their parents.
- The date and the muhurtham, written as a window: between 9 and 10:30 in the morning.
- The venue: the kalyana mandapam, with the address.
- The request: come with your family and bless the couple.
- The reception, often the evening before or after.
- The hosts' names.
The muhurtham window
Tamil invitations usually give the muhurtham as a span, such as “காலை 9 மணி முதல் 10.30 மணிக்குள்” (between 9 and 10:30 am). The thali is tied within that window. Guests who want to see the mangalya dharanam should arrive at the start of it, so the window is the time that matters most on the card.

Moi, the wedding gift
In many Tamil weddings, guests give moi, a cash gift in an envelope, often handed to a relative seated at a table who records each gift in a notebook. The custom is so well known that guests rarely need telling, but if the family prefers no gifts, a gentle line on the invitation is understood.
Practical notes for guests
- Arrive at the start of the muhurtham window to see the thali being tied.
- Morning weddings mean breakfast is often served; mention it on the card.
- If the reception is the evening before, say so clearly, since many guests assume it follows the wedding.
- Give the mandapam's map link and parking details.
Explain the window
If many guests are from outside Tamil Nadu, add a line explaining the muhurtham window. Guests used to evening weddings sometimes arrive at noon and miss the ceremony entirely.
Design
Tamil wedding invitations often use temple gold, maroon and green, kolam patterns, the kuthuvilakku lamp, banana leaves and mango-leaf torans. The colour combinations guide has a traditional palette, and the fonts guide explains why a Unicode font matters for any Indian script.
