A Telugu wedding invitation, often called the శుభలేఖ (shubhalekha), usually opens with a blessing such as శ్రీరస్తు శుభమస్తు అవిఘ్నమస్తు, names the bride and groom and both sets of parents, and gives the muhurtham, the exact auspicious time of the wedding, which many guests plan their arrival around. It lists the main functions, the venue and the meal. Below is a guide to the rituals guests will see, and wording in Telugu and English to adapt.

Every family differs

Telugu wedding customs vary between regions, communities and families. Treat this as the common pattern, and follow your elders and your priest. Have someone fluent check any Telugu text before you share it.

The muhurtham comes first

In many Telugu weddings the muhurtham is the heart of the day, and it's often set late at night or in the early hours of the morning, depending on what the priest finds auspicious. That makes the invitation's timing especially important. Give the muhurtham time clearly, and if it's very late or very early, say what time guests should arrive and when the meal will be served, so that elders and families with children can plan.

Rituals guests will see

RitualWhat happens
Pellikuthuru and pellikodukuThe bride and groom are prepared at their homes with turmeric, oil and blessings, a day or two before
Snathakam and kasi yatraThe groom's rite of passage, and the playful kasi yatra, when he sets off as if for Kashi and the bride's brother persuades him to marry
KanyadanamThe bride's parents give their daughter's hand
Jeelakarra bellamAt the muhurtham, the couple place a paste of cumin and jaggery on each other's heads, a moment many families treat as the moment of marriage
Mangalya dharanaThe groom ties the mangalsutra
TalambraluThe couple shower each other with rice, often coloured with turmeric, amid laughter
Saptapadi and Arundhati darshanamThe seven steps, and the couple are shown the star Arundhati as a symbol of fidelity
Names, order and details vary between families.

A short line on the invitation's later pages explaining one or two of these is a kind touch when guests come from other communities.

What the shubhalekha includes

  • A blessing at the top, and often an image of the family deity, such as Venkateswara or Ganesh.
  • The bride's and groom's names, with their parents' names and native places.
  • The date and the muhurtham, sometimes with the lagnam named.
  • The venue, often a kalyana mandapam or function hall.
  • The functions before and after, such as the pellikuthuru and the reception.
  • The names of the hosts, and often the relatives who welcome guests.

Telugu headings and lines

Headings and a short invitation line

The last three lines say, in the formal way used on many cards: please come with your whole family to our daughter's wedding and bless the bride and groom. Have someone in the family who reads Telugu well check every line, and the spellings of every name.

The names, dates and places below are examples.

Telugu and English together

Many Telugu families send a bilingual invitation: Telugu for elders and relatives, English for friends and colleagues who don't read the script. A printed card often has Telugu on one side and English on the other. A digital invitation can give each language its own page, which keeps both readable on a phone. The fonts guide lists Telugu fonts that display correctly on every phone.

Design

Telugu wedding cards often use deep red and gold, turmeric yellow, or temple-inspired designs with gopurams, kalashams, banana leaves and mango-leaf torans. Kalamkari art, from Andhra Pradesh itself, is a natural choice; the Kalamkari and Gond guide explains how to use it well.

Practical notes for guests

  • Arrival time: for a late-night muhurtham, say when guests should arrive and when dinner is served.
  • Dress: silk sarees and dhotis or kurtas for the wedding; a lighter outfit for the pellikuthuru.
  • Gifts: cash in an envelope, silver or a household gift; a line saying “your blessings are enough” is understood if the family prefers no gifts.
  • Travel: a map link and the nearest landmark, since function halls can be hard to find at night.

Late muhurthams

If the muhurtham is after midnight, write both dates plainly, for example “the night of Friday 11 December, muhurtham at 1:15 am on Saturday 12 December”. Guests get the date wrong more often than the time.

The Tamil wedding invitation guide and the Bengali wedding invitation guide cover two more traditions, and the Indian wedding invitation card guide covers the basics. More are under weddings across India.
