Wedding card matter for a daughter's wedding is written by the bride's parents: they announce the wedding of their daughter, name the groom and his parents, and invite guests to the functions they host, which on the bride's side usually means the welcome of the baraat or jaan, the wedding rites and the meal. Many bride's family cards carry a particular tenderness, since the wedding also marks the daughter's farewell. Samples in Gujarati, Hindi and English follow.
About the samples
Names, dates and places in the samples are examples. Have an elder read the final card matter, and confirm the groom's family's names with them in writing.

A tender line
Many bride's families add a line about the daughter's farewell, either in the bal manuhar or in a short note. It should be warm rather than mournful: a wedding is a happy day, and guests take their cue from the card.
दीदी की विदाई में आपका आशीर्वाद चाहिए।
મારી દીદીના લગ્નમાં જરૂર જરૂર આવજો.
Do come and bless Priya as she begins her new life.
Welcoming the baraat or jaan
Guests on the bride's side are hosts as much as guests: they help welcome the groom's party. If you'd like relatives to be at the venue for the welcome, give the arrival time, and a little before it, on the card. For a Gujarati wedding, the ponkhvu, when the bride's mother welcomes the groom, is one of the warmest moments of the evening, and close relatives like to be there for it.
Listing the functions in order
A bride's family card usually lists its functions in the order they happen, so guests can see at a glance which days they're needed. In a Gujarati family that might be mandap muhurat, grah shanti, pithi, mameru, then the wedding day with the jaan aagman, the hastmelap and the meal. A Hindi card might list the tilak, the mehndi, the haldi, then the baraat aagman and the pheras. Not every guest is invited to every function; the guide to inviting guests to some functions explains how to send each tier its own version.
Who signs the card
The bride's parents usually sign, sometimes with the grandparents' names above them as a mark of respect. If a parent has passed away, many families still include the name with a respectful marker, or the card is sent by the surviving parent, a grandparent, or an uncle who has stood in the parent's place. There's no single rule; what matters is that the family is comfortable with how it reads, and that the elders have seen it before it goes out.
Common slips
- Honorifics: सौ. कां. for the bride and चि. for the groom; ચિ. સૌ. કાં. and ચિ. in Gujarati.
- The groom's family's names and town, confirmed with them in writing.
- The baraat arrival time, which often runs late; give a realistic one.
- Separate meal timings if the meal begins before the wedding rites, as it often does.
Dinner first
If the meal starts before the rituals, say so plainly: “Dinner from 7 pm; the wedding rites begin at 10 pm.” Guests who can't stay late can eat, bless the couple and leave without missing the part they came for.
