Hindi wedding card matter follows a familiar shape: a shloka or Shri Ganeshay Namah at the top, the main invitation from the parents with चि. before the groom's name and सौ. कां. before the bride's, the date and venue, and then lists of relatives under स्वागतोत्सुक and दर्शनाभिलाषी, finished with a playful bal manuhar line from the children. Below are lines for each part that you can copy and adapt, and one complete sample.

About the samples

Names, dates and places in the samples are examples. Have an elder in the family read the final matter before printing or sharing.

Opening shlokas

Most Hindi cards open with an invocation to Ganesh. These two are among the most widely used:

Vakratunda shloka

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।

निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥

Mangalam shloka

मंगलम् भगवान विष्णुः, मंगलम् गरुड़ध्वजः।

मंगलम् पुण्डरीकाक्षः, मंगलाय तनो हरिः॥

A simple ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥ alone is equally common and never wrong. Some families use a line for their own deity instead, such as ॥ जय श्री कृष्ण ॥ or ॥ जय माता दी ॥.

The main invitation lines

The heart of the card announces the wedding and invites the guest. A few common ways to phrase it:

Announcing the wedding

हमारे सुपुत्र चि. अमित का शुभ विवाह

सौ. कां. प्रिया (सुपुत्री श्रीमती सुनीता एवं श्री रमेश अग्रवाल)

के साथ होना निश्चित हुआ है।

Inviting the guest

इस मंगल अवसर पर आप सपरिवार सादर आमंत्रित हैं।

आपकी गरिमामयी उपस्थिति प्रार्थनीय है।

कृपया पधारकर नवदम्पति को आशीर्वाद प्रदान करें।

आपकी गरिमामयी उपस्थिति प्रार्थनीय है means “your gracious presence is requested”, and it's the most formal of the three.

Under these headings the family lists relatives who look forward to welcoming the guest, usually uncles, aunts and cousins, with their surnames. On a printed card the lists can be long; on a digital invitation, a short version reads better.

Bal manuhar lines

The children's line is many guests' favourite part of a Hindi card. A few that families use, with the relation changed to suit:

Bal manuhar

मेरे चाचा की शादी में ज़रूर-ज़रूर आना।

मेरी बुआ की शादी में आप नहीं आए तो हम नाराज़ हो जाएँगे।

भैया की शादी है, नाचने ज़रूर आना।

दीदी की विदाई में आपका आशीर्वाद चाहिए।

Separate guides cover card matter written specifically from the bride's side and the groom's side. For English wording, see the parents' wording guide, which also has a Hindi sample, and the other wording guides.

Common slips in Hindi card matter

  • श्रीमती, not श्रीमति. The second is a very common misspelling on printed cards.
  • चि. for the groom and सौ. कां. for the bride, not the other way round. Proofread these two lines with an elder.
  • सुपुत्र and सुपुत्री for son and daughter on a formal card; पुत्र and पुत्री are correct but plainer.
  • One spelling of each name across every page, including the swagatotsuk lists.
  • The nukta in words such as ज़रूर: it's correct to use it, but be consistent.
  • Dates and times written the same way throughout, for example शनिवार, 12 दिसंबर 2026, सायं 7 बजे.

Typing it correctly

Type Hindi card matter with a Unicode keyboard or font, so it displays properly on every phone. Old non-Unicode fonts such as Kruti Dev break when text is shared; the fonts guide explains why and suggests Devanagari fonts that look traditional.

Questions people ask

What is written at the top of a Hindi wedding card?

Usually ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥, often with a shloka such as Vakratunda Mahakaya. Some families use a line for their own deity instead.

What does सौ. कां. mean on a wedding card?

It stands for सौभाग्यकांक्षिणी (saubhagyakankshini), a blessing for the bride meaning one who wishes for a blessed married life.

What is bal manuhar on a wedding card?

A playful request from the children of the family, such as “mere chacha ki shaadi mein zaroor aana”. It usually comes at the end of the card.

What is the difference between swagatotsuk and darshanabhilashi?

Both list relatives. स्वागतोत्सुक means eager to welcome you, and दर्शनाभिलाषी means longing to see you. Families use one or both.
