A wedding cocktail party invitation needs the hosts, the date, an evening start time, the venue, the dress code, and a clear sense of the evening: drinks and music, often for friends and younger relatives. Many families hold it separately from the traditional functions so that elders who'd rather not attend don't have to. In dry states such as Gujarat, where alcohol is prohibited without a permit, the same evening is often a mocktail party, and the invitation should say so.
Who hosts it
The cocktail evening is often hosted by the couple, by their friends, or by the siblings, rather than by the parents. That changes the tone of the invitation: it can be lighter and more personal than the main card. Some families make it the groom's side's party and some the bride's; in others both sides host together, the night before the wedding.
What the invitation should say
- The hosts, if it's not the parents.
- The date and start time, and ideally an end time.
- The venue, with a map link.
- The dress code: black tie, Indo-western, cocktail wear, or a colour theme.
- Who it's for: adults only, or everyone.
- Drinks: a cocktail bar, a mocktail bar, or both.
- Getting home: cabs arranged, or a note to plan a ride.
Alcohol, the law and family sensitivities
Families feel differently about alcohol, and the law differs between states. Gujarat and Bihar are dry states, where alcohol is prohibited except under specific permits, and several other states restrict it in various ways. Hotels and venues know the local rules; ask them before you plan. In many Gujarati families, the cocktail party is a mocktail party by design, with a bar of inventive non-alcoholic drinks that's every bit as festive.
Responsibility
Follow the law where your event is held, and the venue's licence. If alcohol is served, make sure there are good non-alcoholic choices, nobody is pressed to drink, and everyone has a safe way home.
Even where alcohol is legal, some elders prefer not to attend an evening with a bar. Holding it as a separate function, with its own invitation, lets them skip it without awkwardness, and lets the younger guests relax.

Planning the evening
- A good non-alcoholic bar, whether or not alcohol is served: fresh juices, mocktails, flavoured sodas.
- Food all evening, not just at dinner: live counters and finger food.
- Music that starts relaxed and builds, with a playlist the couple has approved.
- A sensible end time, especially if the wedding is the next morning.
- Safe rides home, arranged by the hosts for late guests.
Mind the morning
If the wedding rituals start early the next morning, end the cocktail evening by 11:30 pm and say so on the invitation. The bride, the groom and the elders will thank you at 6 am.
A simple running order
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8 pm | Guests arrive; welcome drinks and starters |
| 8:45 pm | The couple's entry, often to a song they chose |
| 9 pm | A short toast or two from friends and siblings |
| 9:15 pm | The dance floor opens |
| 10:30 pm | Dinner counters open |
| 11:30 pm | The evening ends, with cabs waiting |
Dress code words, explained
| On the invitation | What guests usually wear |
|---|---|
| Cocktail wear | Dresses, saree gowns, suits or a sharp bandhgala |
| Indo-western | Fusion outfits: a dhoti-style trouser with a jacket, a draped skirt |
| Black tie | Gowns and tuxedos, or a formal sherwani |
| A colour theme | Anything in the named colours, such as “all black” or “shades of gold” |
If you choose a colour theme, say it early, ideally in the save the date, so guests have time to find something.
Adults only, kindly
Many cocktail evenings are adults only. Say it plainly and kindly on the invitation, “an adults-only evening”, and if many guests have young children, consider arranging a babysitter room at the venue. A separate guide covers adults-only wording in detail.
