A sangeet invitation needs the couple's names, the date, an evening start time, the venue, the dress code and a hint of what to expect: family performances, a DJ, dinner. If you're asking guests to perform, the invitation, or a message sent with it, is the place to say so and to give the rehearsal plan. The tone can be the most playful of the whole wedding. Samples in English, Hindi and Gujarati are below.
About the samples
Names, dates and venues in the samples are examples.
What a sangeet is, today
The sangeet began as an evening of women's wedding songs, often called the ladies sangeet, with dholak and folk songs passed down in the family. In many families it has grown into a full evening: choreographed dances by each side, a DJ, and dinner. Both are sangeet, and many families now do a little of each: the traditional songs early in the evening, the dancing later.
What to put on a sangeet invitation
- Whose sangeet: usually a joint one for both families.
- The date and start time, and an end time if the venue has one.
- The venue, with a map link.
- The dress code: Indo-western, a colour theme, or “dress to dance”.
- Performances: whether each side is performing, and whether guests may join.
- Dinner: so guests don't eat before coming.

Asking guests to perform
If you'd like family and friends to dance, tell them early, ideally three or four weeks before, and keep the main invitation separate from the logistics. A short message to the performers works better:
We're putting together a family dance for the sangeet on 11 December, and we'd love you in it.
Rehearsals: Sundays at 5 pm at our home, from 15 November.
The song list and videos are in the group. Reply if you're in.
Short sets
Keep each performance under five minutes and the total under an hour. Guests love the first three dances and get hungry by the eighth.
Dress code ideas
- A colour for each family: pinks for the bride's side, blues for the groom's, which makes the dance-offs look wonderful in photos.
- Indo-western glamour: sequins, jackets, anything you can dance in.
- A decade theme, such as the 70s or 90s, for families who enjoy dressing up.
- Simple festive: bright colours, comfortable shoes.
Choosing the songs
Mix generations. A sangeet where only the cousins know the songs loses the elders by the third dance. Start with a few old film songs or traditional wedding songs the grandparents can sing along to, then move to the newer ones. Share the song list with the DJ a week ahead, with the order of performances, so there's no fumbling between dances.
A typical running order
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7 pm | Guests arrive; traditional songs with the dholak |
| 8 pm | Family performances, one side then the other |
| 9 pm | The couple's dance, then open floor |
| 9:30 pm | Dinner, with the music continuing |
Design and the rest of the set
Sangeet invitations suit evening palettes: midnight blue with gold, deep purple, or black with jewel tones. The colour combinations guide has a sangeet palette with hex codes, and the mehndi wording guide covers the function that often comes the same day. The Indian wedding invitation guide explains how the function invitations fit with the main card. More are under wedding events.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a sangeet and a mehndi?
The mehndi is when henna is applied, usually in the afternoon. The sangeet is an evening of songs and dance. Many families hold them on the same day or combine them.
What should guests wear to a sangeet?
Festive evening wear: Indo-western outfits, lehengas, sherwanis or kurtas. If you have a colour theme, put it on the invitation.
How early should sangeet performers be told?
Three to four weeks before, so there's time for a few rehearsals. Send performers a separate message with the songs and rehearsal times.
Is the sangeet only for women?
Traditionally the ladies sangeet was, but today most sangeets are for both families and all guests. Say on the invitation if yours is women only.
