Baby shower planning checklist for Indian families

A baby shower planning checklist for Indian families: the date and muhurat, venue, guest list, invitations, ritual items, food, decor and her comfort.

A baby shower, whether a godh bharai, a seemant, a valaikaapu or a modern celebration, can be planned in four to six weeks: fix the date with the family and the priest, choose a comfortable venue, agree the guest list with the mother-to-be, send invitations two to three weeks ahead, gather the ritual items, plan simple food and decor, and keep her comfort at the centre of every choice. The checklist below breaks that into weeks.

Six weeks before

  • Agree who hosts. Traditionally her in-laws in many families, sometimes her parents, often both now.
  • Fix the date. The seventh month is most common; ask the priest for a good day if your family follows a muhurat, and check with her doctor about travel if she's going anywhere.
  • Decide the format: a traditional ceremony, a modern party, or a ceremony followed by a relaxed lunch.
  • Decide women only, or everyone.
  • Set a budget, and who pays for what.

Four weeks before

  • Book the venue: home for an intimate gathering, a small hall for a larger family.
  • Draw up the guest list with the mother-to-be; the guest list guide helps with who to invite.
  • Choose a theme, if you want one; the themes guide has ideas.
  • Book a caterer or plan home cooking with help.
  • Arrange a photographer, or a cousin with a good camera.

Two to three weeks before

  • Send the invitations, with a call to elders first.
  • Buy her outfit, often a saree gifted by her parents' family.
  • Order flowers and decor: a backdrop, a comfortable decorated seat, marigold or jasmine strings.
  • Plan return gifts.

Ritual items

Ask the elders or the priest for your family's list. Common items include:

ItemUsed for
Fruit, dry fruit, a coconutFilling her lap (godh bharai, khoda bharvo)
BanglesValaikaapu, and many godh bharai ceremonies
Kumkum, turmeric, rice, flowersThe puja and the blessings
SweetsOffered and shared
A saree or outfitGifted to her for the ceremony
A rakhdi or protective threadIn many Gujarati seemant ceremonies
Families differ; your elders will know your list.

The week before

  • Confirm the caterer, decorator and photographer by phone.
  • Send a reminder with the time and the map.
  • Prepare the trays for the ritual.
  • Plan who welcomes guests, and who stays beside her through the ceremony.

On the day

  • Let her rest in the morning; the preparations can happen around her.
  • Seat her comfortably, with back support, water and a small snack within reach.
  • Keep the ceremony unhurried but not long; ask elders to bless in pairs if the line is long.
  • Serve her meal early, not after all the guests.
  • Keep a quiet room where she can rest.

Her comfort first

Plan everything around her health: her doctor's advice on travel and standing, food she can eat comfortably, and a way to step away if she's tired. The ceremony exists for her and the baby.

Food

Light, familiar food suits a baby shower: a few chaat counters, a simple lunch, sweets. Many families serve the mother-to-be's favourite dishes or cravings, and in Tamil families the variety rice of the valaikaapu is the highlight. Avoid very spicy or heavy food for her, and keep plenty of water and fresh juice.

Where to hold it

In many families the baby shower is held at the in-laws' home, and the mother-to-be then goes to her parents' home for the delivery. In others it's held at her parents' home, or at a small hall if both families are large. If she lives in another city, consider holding it where she is rather than asking her to travel late in pregnancy. Check with her doctor first, and choose a ground-floor venue or one with a lift.

Where the money usually goes

ItemShare of a typical budget
FoodThe largest share
Venue and decorA large share for a hall, much less at home
Her outfit and the ritual itemsA modest share
Return giftsDepends on the number of guests
PhotographyOptional; a relative can cover it
Rough guidance only. Every family's budget is different.

Return gifts

Return gifts for a baby shower are usually small and thoughtful: a box of sweets, a set of bangles for married women in some families, a small plant, or a packet of seeds with a note about new beginnings. Count the guests before ordering, and keep a few extra for relatives who arrive without warning.

Wording the invitation

Keep it warm and short. The godh bharai guide, the seemant guide and the valaikaapu guide each have samples in English and the family's language. A Gujarati example:

Gujarati

A gift list

Keep a list of who gave which gift. A few weeks later, when the baby arrives, it's the list that makes the thank-you calls easy.
