A godh bharai invitation names the mother-to-be, the family hosting, the date, the time and the venue, in a warm and simple tone. The ceremony is usually held in the seventh month of pregnancy, often around midday, and lasts a couple of hours. Many families keep it to close relatives and friends, so the invitation can be personal rather than grand.

What godh bharai is

Godh bharai means “filling the lap”. The women of the family, and now often everyone present, bless the mother-to-be and fill her lap, or the end of her saree, with fruit, dry fruit, a coconut, sweets and gifts. She is dressed in new clothes and bangles, and the elders pray for a healthy baby and an easy delivery.

The name is most common in North India. Other communities hold ceremonies with a similar spirit: seemant in Gujarat, valaikaapu in Tamil Nadu, dohale jevan in Maharashtra and saadh in Bengal. The guide to baby shower and seemant invitations has ideas for those.

No gender reveal

Prenatal sex determination is illegal in India, so there is no gender reveal at a godh bharai. Keep the wording neutral: “the little one”, “our baby”, “the new arrival”.

When it's held

The seventh month is the most common choice, and some families follow the fifth or the eighth. Many ask the priest for a good day. Midday suits most mothers-to-be better than a late evening, and the whole event is usually over in two to three hours.

What the invitation should say

  • The mother-to-be's name, and often the father's.
  • Who is hosting: usually her in-laws, sometimes her own parents.
  • The date, the time and the venue, with a map link.
  • Whether it's for women only or for everyone. Many families now invite both.
  • A dress code if there is one. Some families pick a colour for the day.
  • An RSVP contact who isn't the mother-to-be.

सौ. (saubhagyavati) is the usual honorific for a married woman on Hindi invitations, and धर्मपत्नी is the respectful word for wife.

A simple order for the day

Knowing the order helps you decide the time on the invitation. A common sequence for a midday godh bharai looks like this, and families add or leave out steps according to their customs.

TimeWhat happens
11:30 amGuests arrive; the mother-to-be is seated in her new outfit
12:00 pmA short puja, often to Ganesh, if the family follows one
12:15 pmThe elders fill her lap with fruit, dry fruit, a coconut and sweets, and bless her one by one
12:45 pmBangles, gifts and photos; some families add light games for the guests
1:15 pmLunch
An example timeline. The blessing takes longer than you expect when every aunt wants a moment.

If the mother-to-be tires easily, ask the elders to bless her in pairs rather than one at a time. It keeps the ritual intact and halves the time she spends sitting.

Keeping the mother-to-be comfortable

The invitation is also a chance to make the day easier for the person at the centre of it.

  • Keep the programme short and say when lunch is served, so the ceremony doesn't stretch on.
  • Choose a venue with a comfortable chair for her and few stairs.
  • Keep the guest list to people she'd be happy to see. It is her day as much as the family's.
  • If she's travelling to her in-laws' or her parents' home for it, fix the date with her doctor's advice in mind.
