Formal Hindi or everyday Hindi?

Formal card Hindi, with words like वाग्दान, सादर आमंत्रित and निवेदक, reads respectfully to elders and suits a printed card or the first page of a digital one. Everyday Hindi, with सगाई, ज़रूर आइए and a line of affection, reads warmly to friends and younger relatives. Many families use the formal version on the invitation and the everyday version in the WhatsApp message that goes with it, which gives them the best of both.

When roka, tilak or sagai are combined

Some families hold the roka or tilak and the sagai on the same day. Name both on the card so guests know what to expect, for example तिलक एवं सगाई समारोह, and give the time of each part on its own line if guests may come for only one.

Slips when translating from English

  • Translating “request the pleasure of your company” word for word; सादर आमंत्रित हैं already carries the meaning.
  • Writing Mr. and Mrs. in Hindi as मिस्टर और मिसेज़ instead of श्री and श्रीमती.
  • Mixing English dates (12/11) with Hindi month names; pick one style.
  • Leaving English honorifics such as Dr. untranslated next to Hindi ones; डॉ. is fine and widely used.

Writing it correctly

  • चि. for the groom and सौ. कां. for the bride, never the other way round.
  • श्रीमती, not श्रीमति, a common misspelling.
  • The other family's names confirmed with them in writing.
  • Dates and times in one consistent style.
  • A Unicode font, so the text displays properly on every phone; the fonts guide explains why.

Let them check their names

Send the Hindi card matter to someone from the other family to check before printing or sharing. It catches spelling slips in their names, and it's a small courtesy they'll notice.

Hindi and English together

Many families send the Hindi invitation to relatives and an English one to friends and colleagues. A digital invitation can carry both, one language per page. The engagement invitation wording guide has English samples, and the sagai guide explains the ceremony itself.

Design

Hindi engagement cards suit blush and gold, maroon and gold, or soft pastels, with a ring or a pair of floral motifs. Use a Devanagari font such as Tiro Devanagari Hindi for the names and a plain one for the details. For designs, see the engagement templates, and more guides are under engagement and ring ceremony.
